Boston Sisters x Red Lined = Empowering Youth Through Menstrual Equity

Thanks to a generous grant from the Boston Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the 2025/2026 school year is off to a terrific start! We were able to expand the reach and impact of those affected by Period Poverty. Since 2014, the Boston Sisters have disbursed over $70,000 in community grants, supporting grassroots organizations that promote wellness, dignity, and equity.

Their funding allowed us to distribute much needed menstrual supplied during a back-to-school drive, benefiting Youth Pride, Inc.

(YPI), is a Rhode Island nonprofit dedicated to supporting LGBTQIA2S+ youth ages 24 and under. These supplies offer both dignity and choice, helping young people

manage their periods with confidence and comfort.

In combination with the community's support, we were able to provide over $2,000 worth of essential supplies to youth experiencing period poverty. Menstrual cups and menstrual underwear, offering reusable, sustainable options. Maxipad packs, ensuring access to reliable, disposable protection. And a special addition of 75 pairs of socks, an often overlooked - highly needed essential supply - providing warmth and care beyond menstrual needs.

These items do more than meet physical needs, they send a message: You matter. Your health matters. Your dignity matters. For youth who have experienced the stress and stigma of period poverty, especially our LBGT youth, this support is a lifeline.

Want to get involved? The Red Thread Project is a living art installation that captures the age of girls, women and those who identify with such - when they began menstruating. Each participant answers two questions: What age did you start menstruating? and How do you identify within the menstrual community? Their responses are represented by colored yarn, creating a vibrant visual narrative of lived experiences. Orange strands represent elementary school, yellow for middle school, green for high school, blue for post-high school, white for supporters who haven’t menstruated, black for those who identify as women but never menstruated, purple for LGBTQ+ individuals, and red threads for those who have ALSO experienced period poverty. The Red Thread Project is ongoing and looking for 1st time submissions for additions to our project.
